Abstract

This study examines the contents and characteristics of American dance that visited Korea in the 1950s and 1960s, and determines its historical significance. The scope of this research includes domestic and foreign literature, with a special focus on Korean newspaper articles. During the 1950s and 60s, US dance tours to South Korea included Tom Two Arrows, Katherine Dunham, Dance Jubilee, Carmen de Lavallade-Alvin Ailey American Dance Company, José Limón Company, Paul Taylor Company and Pauline Koner visited Korea for performances or educational events. Their visits had a political purpose, which was to promote American culture during the Cold War. Koreans expressed resistance to American Indian dance while embracing Modern dance. The focus on modern dance in these tours, influenced Koreans’ perception of American modern dance as a preeminent American art form. This study is significant as an early study that looks at American dance that visited Korea in the 1950s and 60s, from both a diplomatic and Korean dance history perspective.
