Abstract
This study aims to comparatively analyze the levels of Korean and American elementary school students’ conceptual understanding of water cycle through a test of drawing the concept of water cycle and understanding the principle of water cycle. As research subjects, this study selected 25 third graders from R Elementary School in a western area, the U. S. and another 25 third graders from H Elementary School, located in a metropolitan city, Korea. The results of this study can be summarized as below. Firstly, as a result of analyzing the levels of both Korean and American elementary school students’ drawing the concept of water cycle, this study found out that 2 from the group of Korean students and 5 from the group of American students drew pictures of comprehensive representation in Level 5, which can be regarded as a science-conceptual picture. As a result of analyzing the components of pictures of water cycle, this study discovered that both Korean and American elementary school students drew the atmosphere most, followed by the hydrosphere, the geosphere, the biosphere. Secondly, as a result of testing their understanding of the essence of water cycle, American elementary students had a higher level of understanding the circular characteristics of water cycle. In a survey conducted to Korean and American elementary school teachers on effective water cycle education, they commonly mentioned the importance of direct participation in activities.
