조선시대 후기와 동시대 일본의 연지화장의 양상에 대한 고찰

Abstract

In this study I examined and compared the common features, differences, and distinctive features of the rouge makeup culture between the late of Chosun dynasty and contemporary Japan(the Edo Age and the Meiji Age). Rouge is called ‘Yonji’ in Korea and ‘Beni’ in Japan. The aspects of the makeup culture of rouge were almost alike between the two countries. People in both countries didn’t like to make up deeply in their cheeks and lips but made up lightly to look lively. However, there were a little differences in the expressing methods of rouge between the two countries. The Japanese women used to make up their lips with rouge after drawing their lips smaller than their original lips because they thought the small and refined lips are more beautiful. Moreover, a wide difference between two countries was the very color of lips. Basically there seemed a common aspect in the expression of lips with red color in both countries. But Japanese women used to make up their lips shined in green metal called ‘Sasairo veni’. It’s color was like a goldbug. It was in great fashion in the Edo Age, but that kind of lip color was not seen in the late of Chosun dynasty. Furthermore, the widest difference between the two countries was the Japanese rouge makeup around the eyes. The makeup method of Gabuki actors in the Edo Age was in fashion among the common women and settled down into the makeup method giving the point of making up around the eyes with red rouge. Although such a red rouge makeup around the eyes remains alive as the Japanese traditional makeup method in the present age, the makeup method of making up rouge around the eyes in Korea was never existed from the ancient times. This is a wide difference between the two countries. We can see another big difference between the two countries that the period of the traditional rouge makeup and the dressing cases replaced with the western cosmetics in Japan was much earlier than that in Korea.
