현대 이슬람학의 동향에 대한 현상학적 접근

현대 종교학에 있어서 현상학은 철학적 의미에 국한된 것은 아니다. 비록, 종교현상학이 후설의 철학적 현상학에 기초한 것은 사실이지만, 그 발전과 공헌은 종교에 대한 현상학적 접근 곧 그 방법론에 있다. 특히, 기존 종교연구의 영역에서 사회학, 심리학적 환원주의 전통의 방법론적 한계를 지적하면서 종교현상학은 발전해왔고, 그 대안을 제시하면서 제 종교 현상에 대한 이해와 연구의 폭을 넓혀 주었으며, 이로서 나름의 독자적인 학문적 영역을 구축해왔다. 그러나 여타 종교현상 이해에 있어 현상학의 확고한 위치와 지대한 공헌에도 불구하고, 이슬람의 제 종교현상들의 현상학적 접근과 이해는 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다. 현상학을 통하여 이슬람적 현상들을 규명해보고자 하는 시도와 노력이 전혀 없었던 것은 아니지만, 현대 이슬람 연구의 주류적 측면에서 보면, 현상학은 여전히 알려지지 않은 서구적 방법론중 하나에 불과하며 그렇게 취급받고 있을 뿐이다. 이러한 배경 하에서 이 글은 이슬람적 현상에 대한 현상학적 접근과 이해의 가능성을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 이 글은 먼저 종교학에서 논의되었던 방법론적 현상학에 대한 관점을 제시하고, 이를 바탕으로 이슬람적 현상에 대한 분석과 해석을 시도한다. 수많은 이슬람적 현상들 중에서 이 글은 ‘현대 이슬람 학의 동향’을 연구 대상으로 택하였다. 특히, 크게 유럽중심주의와 아랍중심주의로 나누어지는 기존 해석들에 초점을 맞추어, 그들의 방법론적 한계를 현상학적 측면에서 고찰하고 규명함으로서, 대안으로서 새로운 방법론의 필요성과 현상학이 방법론적 통찰을 제공할 수 있음을 제시하고자 한다.
