본고는 고전 대하소설 <화산선계록>에 나타난 비복(婢僕) 비취⋅비운 남매의 조력자적 양상에 대해 고찰하고 그 서사적 기능을 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 비취⋅비운 남매는 위부(魏府)의 비복으로 이옥수의 명을 받아 위부 내외의 갈등을 해결한다. 비취⋅비운 남매의 양상이 갖는 특이점은 이들이 원래는 이옥수의 비복이 아님에도 이옥수에 의해 발탁(拔擢)되었다는 점과 이들의 행동 양상이 <화산선계록> 여타의 비복들과는 상이하다는 것이다. 비취⋅비운 남매의 조력 양상 및 특징은 크게 세 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 첫째, 이들은 탁월한 능력의 소유자로 형상화되어 있다. 둘째, 이들은 신물(神物)을 자유자재로 사용한다. 셋째, 조력의 공간이 나누어진다. 이러한 양상은 비취⋅비운 남매의 능력과 행위의 적극성을 나타낸다고 할 수 있다. 비취⋅비운 남매의 이러한 적극성이 서사 내에서 기능하는 바는 크게 두 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 먼저, 이들은 갈등을 증폭시키고 이로 인해 극적 재미를 구현해낸다. 다른 하나는 비취⋅비운 남매의 적극적 양상이 오히려 여성주동인물인 이옥수의 능력을 부각하고 있다는 점이다. 비취⋅비운 남매가 적극적으로 형상화되는 일련의 과정은 여성주동인물 이옥수와 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 이처럼 <화산선계록>은 비취⋅비운 남매와 같은 비복의 활약이 두드러진 작품이다. 하지만 서술자가 하층 계급의 뛰어난 활약을 강조하기 위해서 이러한 서사를 진행한 것으로 보이지는 않는다. 서술자가 과도할 정도로 이옥수의 능력을 강조하는 점에서 이를 알 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to reveal supportive aspects of sister and brother called Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운) respectively and narrative functions in Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록). Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운) are servants of Wi family. They resolve various conflicts by taking orders from Lee Ok-su(이옥수). There are two peculiarities of them. First, they were selected by Lee Ok-su(이옥수), even though they were not the servants of hers. Second, their behaviour is different to other servants of Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록). Previously, Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운)'s supportive aspects and characteristics were divided into three main categories. First, they are embodied of having superior abilities. Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운)'s abilities are mentioned in the narrative several times. Second, they use Lee Ok-su(이옥수)'s three treasures freely. Lee Ok-su(이옥수) gives her three treasures called Jomagyeong(조마경), Honggeumsak(홍금삭) and Singeom(신검) to the people around her so that she let use them properly. Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운) also fix the problem by receiving treasures from Lee Ok-su(이옥수). Thirdly, the space for help is divided. Bi-chwi(비취) helps her master in the feminine space of a boudoir, and Bi-un(비운) assists his master in the masculine space of battle. In this process, Bi-chwi(비취) moves on 16 places to carry out the Lee Ok-su(이옥수)'s orders. On the other hand, Bi-un(비운) does not travel many times, apparently because Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운) have different roles. Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운)‘s activity can be divided into two important functions within the narrative. First, they fuel the conflict making dramatic fun. Secondly, Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운)‘s active aspect indeed highlights the ability of the heroine, Lee Ok-su(이옥수). Lee Ok-su(이옥수) is the person at the center of Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록). The process in which they are actively embodied is closely related to the heroine, Lee Ok-su(이옥수). Thus, Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록) is a novel that shows the remarkable activities of servants such as Bi-chwi(비취) and Bi-un(비운). However, it does not imply that the narrator conducted this narrative to emphasize the superior performance of the lower classes, now that the narrator only emphasizes the ability of Lee Ok-su(이옥수) exaggeratively.'
