Abstract
The oil price has been falling since 2014, influencing not only each of the GCC government’s budget but also their employment and labor markets, with exception of the UAE, which has pursued economic diversification transform its economic model from oil-centered development to a knowledge-based economy. Women’s participation in the labor market is central to the following two questions concerning cultures characterized as “bastions of patriarchy and male chauvinism”: Would the patriarchal culture be sustained by intensifying social and cultural norms imposed on women?, or would it be diluted to accept women’s transformed role within society and the family? This study explores the low oil price and its influence on the labor markets in GCC countries, and anticipates the future of patriarchy of the UAE, which will offer insights into the future direction social change across the whole GCC. This study will employ both an economic structure approach and a cultural value approach in exploring the relationships between economic development and women’s status.
