초록
This paper compares and points to differences between the configuration and representation methods of Japanese and Korean riddles. First, Korean riddles use a symmetrical configuration method, but Japanese riddles a complex configuration method. Korean riddles provide a hint with two related words, such as old and young or father and son. Japanese riddles provide a hint that can be interpreted in two ways based on the pronunciation and meaning of Chinese characters. The Japanese riddle configuration method is similar to syllogism. Second, Japanese riddles can also follow another configuration method which separates the words of the riddle. This method can be divided into three types: inserting, removing, or reversing the words in the riddle. As well, a character can be inserted or removed from a word, and a word can be read in reverse or turned over, resulting in the dismantling and reconstruction of the word. Third, Korean riddles also use two methods: metaphors and anthropomorphism. Japanese riddles use a different expression method, for example, to describe a person’s professional or identification temperament with quibble. This feature of Japanese riddles largely stems from the popularity of this genre in Edo literature.
