초록
This study aims to investigate the use of verb tenses in Korean EFL learners’ writing. Ninety-eight students from a university in Gyeonggi-do participated in the study. Data were collected through an essay test that required them to describe their past experiences, facts related to present experiences, and future events. This study was conducted with a mixture of quantitative by using a one-way ANOVA and qualitative research methods of case study of error analysis and estimating their causes, with a performance analysis of the participants enrolled in an English course for a semester in which writing was the primary assessment. As a result, the Korean learners’ tense use was found to be incorrect or inappropriate in diverse situations. In addition, various tense errors occurred in their writings, such as omission, addition, incorrect formation, and misordering. Based on the research results, a qualitative study was conducted on tense errors, which revealed that verb errors were caused by negative transfer of L1, lack of internalization of learned tenses, and less awareness of the complexities of English tenses. Several recommendations to help minimize tense errors were suggested.
