교육사회학의 기원과 변천에 대한 역사 서술의 재검토

초록

이 논문은 한국에서 일반적으로 받아들여지고 있는 교육사회학의 역사 서술을 검토하였다. 교육사회학의 기원에 대한 서술과 ‘교육적 사회학’과 ‘교육의 사회학’의 부침에 대한 서술에 초점을 두고, 그 서술이 타당한지 그리고 교육사회학의 정체에 대해서는 어떤 시사를 던지는지 검토하였다. 교육사회학의 기원에 대한 서술은 ‘교육적 사회학’의 강의 개설에 주목하여 이루어졌지만, 역사적 사실(史實)로 면밀하게 뒷받침되지 않는다는 문제를 지니고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 새로운 학문에 전제되어야 할 미답(未踏)의 탐구 영역을 드러내주지 않는다는 문제까지 지니고 있다고 정리했다. 교육적 사회학과 교육의 사회학의 변전에 대한 서술 역시 교육의 사회학 부문에 대한 역사를 간과함으로써 사실을 왜곡하고 있으며, 교육사회학의 정체성에 관련해서도 그 학문적 자주성을 입증해주지 않는다고 정리했다. 결과적으로 이와 같은 역사 서술의 한계는 사실에 근거한 서술 보완을 요구할 뿐만 아니라, 교육사회학의 학문적 정체를 혼미하게 방치한다는 점에서, 더 근원적인 정체 모색의 탐구를 요구한다고 제안했다.

Abstract

The article examined the historical descriptions of the sociology of education. The focal concern was on whether they are historically correct and on what they imply with regard to the academic identity of the field. The examination revealed that some descriptions are not substantiated by the historical facts and that the identity question of the sociology of education still remains unsolved. The history of the field as described in South Korea does not show the research problems that belong uniquely to the sociology of education. If the sociology of education claims the status of an academic discipline, it is suggested that further review of the history and the renewed search for identity would be necessary.
