Abstract
This study analyzed the relationships between high school girls’ participation in school physical education classes and physical health, lifestyle habits, mental health, and the level of Generalized Anxiety Disorder(GAD) using data from the 2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey(KYRBS). The analysis revealed that higher participation in PE classes was associated with greater physical activity rates, less sedentary life and smartphone usage, and more favorable mental health indicators such as lower levels of stress, depression, and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, participation was positively related to better sleep quality, subjective health perception, and low levels of GAD. These findings indicate that PE classes are not only linked to physical health but also to mental stability and overall quality of life. However, the participation rate of female students remains low, with existing environments and programs failing to adequately address their needs. This highlights the necessity of improving tailored programs for female students, and providing policy support to promote participation. Such efforts could help foster both physical and mental health among high school girls.
