English Teaching 에 게재된 말하기 논문 주제 분석: 1976-2012년에 게재된 논문을 중심으로

초록

그동안 영어교육과 관련된 연구 방법과 전반적인 연구 주제에 관한 분석을 주로 한 논문들은 많이 있어왔다. 한국의 대표적인 영어교육 학술지인 English Teaching 에 듣기, 말하기, 독해, 작문등의 분야에서 연구 동향에 관한 연구들이 있어 왔으나 대부분 연구 방법, 연구 주제, 자료수집 유형, 통계분석기법 등을 전반적으로 다루었고 연구 주제를 심층적으로 분석한 논문은 부족한 편이다. Hedge(2000)에 의하면 우리는 일상생활에서 쓰기에 9%, 읽기에 16%, 말하기에 30%, 듣기에45%를 할애한다. 이는 현대사회에서 의사소통 활동이 문자 언어에서 구두 언어로 전이되고 있음을 의미한다. 본 연구의 목적은 한국의 대표적인 영어교육 학술지인 English Teaching에 1976년부터 2012년까지 게재된 총 82편의 말하기 관련 논문들을 연구 주제별로 분석하는 것이다. 본 연구를 위해 총 82편의 말하기 관련 논문들은 Burns(1998)와 McCarthy와 O’Keeffe(2004)의 분석 틀을 바탕으로 총 8개의 주제별로 분석되었다. 총 8개의 주제는 의사소통 능력, 대화 분석, 교수 방법,말하기 활동 및 과업, 교재, 교사 언어, 의사소통 전략, 그리고 말하기 평가였다. 각 주제별로 수행된 논문들에 대한 분석 결과 말하기 평가에 관한 논문이 20.73%로 가장 높은 빈도수를 보였고 그다음은 말하기 활동 및 과업, 그리고 의사소통 능력에 관한 논문들이 각각 18.29%로 높은 빈도수를 보였다. 그 다음은 교수 방법 12.2%, 교재와 교사 언어가 각각 7.32% 마지막으로 의사소통 전략에 관한 논문들은 6.1%의 분포로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과의 시사점으로는 영어 영역별 세부적인연구의 흐름을 파악할 수 있는 연구들이 이어지는 것이 필요하며 이는 향후 필요한 연구의 방향을제시하는 데도 기여할 것이라 생각된다.

Abstract

Many studies have been conducted on the trends in research into English teaching. These include methods of research methods and general topics of research. No studies, however, were directed toward oral language skills until Cha's (2006) and Park’s (2006) analysis of research papers on listening and speaking skills published in English Teaching, one of the main journals of teaching English as a foreign language in Korea. According to Hedge (2000), with respect to language skills, the average person employs 9percent in writing, 16 percent in reading, 30 percent in speaking, and 45 percent in listening. This indicates that modern people are shifting more and more from the written language to the oral language. The purpose of this study was to investigate English Teaching research papers on speaking that have been published over the past 36 years and to study the trends in research of research topics. For the study, 82 articles were collected. Using Burn's (1998) and McCarthy and O'Keeffe's (2004) framework of analysis, the research topics were analyzed. The results showed that the percentage of articles related to oral assessment were highest (20.73%), followed by communicative activities/tasks and communicative competence at 18.29 percent. The study discusses its results in light of other research and suggests future directions for speaking-focused research.
