Abstract

This paper defines the concepts of the aesthetics of Seon(Zen) in Cho Jee-hoon's Poetics and analyzes the educational meaning of it. The aesthetics of Seon in Cho Jee-hoon's Poetics has three items in formal aspect. First, the simplification of the complexity is the aesthetics of the simplicity. This aesthetics presupposes the connotation. So, the short and simple form must connote the big. Second, the specialization of the commonness is the aesthetics that connotes the uncommon meaning in the natural and familiar expression. This aesthetics is a contrast to the aesthetics of defamiliarization. The defamiliarization is the aesthetics captured by the modernity, but the specialization of the commonness is the aesthetics that renders the vision of anti-modernity. Third, the generalization of the part is the aesthetics that connotes the whole cosmos in the small part of the cosmos. This is familiar to the synecdoche in the aspect of the rhetoric. So it can be explained by the synecdoche. The synecdoche is the rhetoric that has the vision of anti-modernity. In addition to this three items, the aesthetics of Seon has another items in the aspect of meaning. The aesthetics of Seon has an inclination for the idea of Seon or the worldview of Buddhism. The education of traditional aesthetics is very difficult, because the concepts of the traditional aesthetics are ambiguous and uncertain. But Cho Jee-hoon defines the concept of the aesthetics of Seon easily and clearly. So the aesthetics of Seon can be effective in the field of modern poetry education. The education of modern poetry is inclined to the western theory and aesthetics. For the balanced education, we need to search for the traditional aesthetics and define the concepts of them.
