초록

Both the Abendland discourse and the school system reform after 1945 are widely-studied subjects, but neither has been studied in the context of the Cold War. This paper deals with the question how we could understand the Cold War differently by shifting the focus towards culture and discourse as we did with these two subjects. In the context of the Cold War, the Abendland discourse showed a Janus face: It contributed to Western integration of postwar West Germany and the anti-communist integration of Europe on the one side, but it blocked, on the other side, the school system reform which was the first gateway for consolidating American cultural hegemony in West German society. The school system reform was an issue where the Abendland discourse was massively involved and it successfully demonstrated its political power and revealed its functional dimension. The discourse of Abendland as cold war rhetoric and as an anti-school-reform movement points us to the necessity to read the Cold War backward through the specific dynamic and power relations in the local space under the Cold War influence, instead of reading the Cold War through the confrontation of super powers and their one-way influence. As soon as the dynamic of the Cold War intrudes into the cultural area where old traditions, ideas, discourses and prejudices intersect, it can play out only in a much more distorted pattern than the case in diplomatic, military, or economic areas.
