Abstract

Meaning in life is recently one of the major topics in psychology with growing social interests, but its conceptual and methodological limitation has hampered research. This study conducted a content analysis of 195 articles published in Korea from 1997 to 2012 to understand the trends in meaning research. Results are as follows. Studies had been increased since 2007 and mostly done with adults. The most common variables were self-related ones such as quality of life and self-esteem but there was no salient difference between clinical/high-risk samples and non-clinical samples regarding themes. PIL was frequently used as a measure while the use of MLQ was increasing and other scales developed in Korea were reported. Quantitative and empirical studies were more common than qualitative and theoretical studies and regression was frequently used in analysis. Various intervention strategies such as pastorial counseling, art therapy, exercise, yoga, and philosophical thought experiment were introduced while logotherapy has been frequently reported. The results were discussed with limitations and suggestions for future study were presented.
