Abstract

This article is to examine the women's existence and the characteristics of Koryo society through women's labor and economic life. Women labored daily household work concerned with food, clothing and shelter life, performance of ancestral sacrifice, and giving good service to a customer etc.. Hand weaving was the most heaviest burden to women because the hampen cloth, a major product, took more time in spinning procedure than cotton. Sons and daughters performed the ancestral sacrifice by turns with equal right. Also women managed the household and worked for their profit by commerce, trade, and usury. This connected with that moneymaking was not regarded as a sort of sin in Buddhism and there was no idea of avoidance of the opposite sex(內外觀念). Therefore, women in Koryo dynasty were the most independent and active than those in Chosun dynasty in terms of labor and economic life due to socio-economic structure and ideological characteristics.
