Abstract
The images and memories of Charles V have been changed in the modern european history. In the religious confessional age after the Reformation Charles V was a saint and a defender of the christian world against the islamic penetration, namely ‘miles christi.’ The cult of Charles V was mainly made by performing stage plays about his work and picture exhibition. In the protestant England, however, he was regarded as a Machiavellist, as described in one of Shakespeare’s famous play, “Henry VIII.” In the age of Enlightenment the european came to understand history by reasons, not by religion. Voltaire said, “Charles V is the best and greatest emperor after Charles the Great.” In the 19th century of historical positivism the biography of Charles V was described with historical sources. But the 19th century is at the same time, the age of nationalism. Under the circumstances the German criticized Charles V and made a national hero of Moritz, duke of Saxon, political rival of the emperor. In the age of the European Union the emperor is said to be the hero of Europe. Charles V is a German, a Spaniard, a Dutchman, a Renaissance monarch, the last medieval monarch, and a owner of Staatsraison. The historical interpretation for Charles V would vary from one time to another as it naturally reflects the view of its age.
