Abstract

This study focuses on the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between economic status and subjective well-being among the elderly. This is particularly true as the socioeconomic inequality and importance of social support increase among the elderly. For this purpose, social support is categorized into four types according to their functions, which are put into structural equation model separately. The results are as follows; First, higher economic status contributes to higher satisfaction with life through more anticipated social support. Second, this mediating effect is mainly due to emotional and instrumental support. Those findings suggest that more attention should be paid to the elderly in inequality research and improving social support can be a effective solution for diminishing economic disparity in subjective well-being.
