초록
This paper deals with the independence of two countries in southeast Asia, Burma and the Philippines, granted by the Japanese government in 1943, with the purpose of maintaining and expanding “the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere.” It was only these countries which formally had become independent nations among Southeast Asian countries under the Japanese occupation rule since 1941. The intent of Japan was quite clear and both countries had something in common: 1) their past independent status before formal colonization by the British and the U.S. and their promised independence in the near future 2) the political maturity for self-governing and their people’s strong desire for independence 3) geopolitical advantages of two countries for expanding the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. As a result, Burma and the Philippines inherited their former political organizations even after “independence” and were forced to cooperate in the war effort under the Japanese command. However, as the war unfolded unfavorably to Japan and its allies, both the Philippine and Myanmar government faced unexpected relocation of the capital and the major political leaders were nearly unprotected by the Japanese army. By examining the granted independence of both countries, this study shows how and why both states became independent under the Japanese imperial rule and what consequences these countries faced the aftermath of Japanese fall in 1945.
