Abstract

This study is on the term tonus from Antiquity to the Middle Age, especially in the Carolingian era. The reason of difficulty as the usage of tonus appears through diverse fields included multiple meanings in Greek Antiquity, nevertheless, the attempts to understand the term tonus have been continued in varies aspects by many scholars during many centuries. Charles Atkinson also tells us that he set his sights on becoming not ‘clearer’ but ‘richer’ through endeavor to show more complicated situations about the term tonus. Atkinson’s article gives us not only a profound and advanced knowledge but also many ideas about the methods of interpretation, the new subject to do about tonus, and so on. After describing the concepts of the tonus in Antiquity, in order to explain the term tonus in the Carolingian era, we understood Atkinson’s 29 quotations explained the term tonus in fields of music and grammar and excerpted from treatises of Greek Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In the processes to understand Atkinson’s article through 29 examples systematically organized, I showed some diagrams carefully used three nouns, ‘Foundation’, ‘Fusion’, and ‘Function’ and three verbs, ‘Accept’, ‘Adopt’, and ‘Adjust’ in the diagrams. That is to say, the meaning of the term tonus is accepted as the foundation from the ancient sources, adopted into practice as the fusion of two concepts in ninth century glosses, and adjusted as the function of practical natation and melodic classification in ninth- and tenth century. The coexistence of these conceptions would eventually be a fully developed system of eight modes (modi).
