그리제와 뮤라이가 공동 창시한 스펙트럴음악은 오늘날 현대음악계에서 중요한 사조 중 하나로 자리매김하였다. 반세기밖에 안 된 짧은 역사를 가졌음에도 불구하고 다수 음악학자는 제 6세대의 도래를 거론하고 있는 것만 보더라도 이 음악이 수많은 작곡가와 학자에게 얼마나 많은 영향을 끼쳤는지를 입증하는 사례이다. 하지만 스펙트럴음악이 역사에 등극했을 당시 예상치 못한 오해로 비난받기 시작했다. 필자는 본고를 통해 스펙트럴음악이란 어떤 음악인지에 관해 먼저 알아보고자 한다. 그리제가 새로운 음악을 확립하면서 어떤 목적하에 자신의 음악을 ‘스펙트럴’이라고 불렀는지, 창시한 본질과 목적, 그리고 확립 배경을 살펴봄으로써 스펙트럴음악에 대한 이해를 도모하고자 한다. 또한, 유럽 음악계의 주류였던 전음열주의음악과 어떤 미학적인 차이점이 있는지 알아봄으로써, 이들은 서로 대항하기보다 시대적인 필요에 따라 확립되었다는 사실을 입증하고자 한다. 끝으로, 1975년에 작곡된 스펙트럴음악의 대표작인 《파르시엘》의 시작부분을 분석하므로 그리제가 정착시킨 새로운 기법적 특징에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 필자는 두 가지 초석을 가지고 논문을 집필했는데, 첫 번째는 역사적인 시점이요, 두 번째는 연구 자료이다. 1972년은 그리제에게 중요한 해이다. 음악원을 졸업한 지 3개월 만에 새로운 기법을 확립했다는 것은 분야를 막론하고 이례적이지 않을 수 없다. 그해 6월 그리제는 음악원을 졸업하고, 7월에 다름슈타트 하계 강좌에 참석했으며, 9월에 장학생으로 빌라 메디치에 2년 동안 체류하게 된다. 단시간 동안 많은 변화가 일어났기에 시간을 거슬러 올라가 스펙트럴 어법 확립 과정의 발자취를 따라가 이 사조에 대한 이해도를 높이고자 한다. 또한, 깊은 연구를 위해 필자는 각종 인쇄물은 물론, 그리제의 가까운 지인과의 인터뷰, 음악가들의 증언 등을 토대로 부족한 부분을 보완하였다.
Abstract
Spectral music, which was co-founded by Grisey and Murail in the mid-seventies, is one of the core streams in the contemporary music field. Musicologists already began to discuss the sixth generation even though its history had not endured half a century yet. In spite of its young age, spectral music has confronted lethal attacks by musicologists who were mainly immerged by dodecaphonic and total serialism music, because they could not understand the aesthetic of this new music and observed spectral music with a serialism perspective. For this reason, an accurate understanding of spectral music’s establishment starting with the meaning of its name seems unavoidable. For what purpose Grisey decided to call his new music ‘spectral’ and what is the aesthetic that the composer was seeking for? In addition, it is important to perceive which aspect of the total serialism music the spectralists criticized and clarify that spectral music was not established to compensate the defect of serialism but because it was needed in this era. Therefore, my research will consist of several aspects. For what reason Grisey gave up serial music? What happened in Darmstadt and how did he seek a new solution? And finally, a short analysis of Partiels, the first spectral music score written in history, will be presented to unveil the peculiarity of this music. Two components are vital in the writing of this dissertation. First, we will go back in time to understand what really happened in 1972, the year Grisey graduated Composition class at Paris Conservatory (in June), went to Darmstadt (in July) and got the scholarship from the Villa Médicis to go to Rome for two years (in September). Grisey felt the need to build a new language this summer and the project started in Rome. Second, each section will be enlighted by historical facts, interviews and testimony of musicians who were close to Grisey or his music.
