Abstract
Richard Wagner’s works tend to share one obvious quality. They frequently illuminate the essential religious message of ‘redemption’. The most famous examples of this kind are Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal. Given that the Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal which are full of religious ideas, I investigated Wagner’s idea of ‘redemption’ in a particularly religious way, based on a prose draft of a drama entitled Jesus of Nazareth and a sketch of a Buddhist drama entitled The Victors. These dramas also reflect the influence of the philosophical ideas of Arthur Schopenhauer and Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach. Although unfinished, these two religious dramas exemplify Wagner’s way of dramatizing and his understanding of the idea of redemption. After all, Wagner appears to have taken the freedom to take any kind of resources from the various religious and philosophical ideas in order to convey a profound message and to affect his audiences’ mind, which characterizes his own dramaturgy.
