초록

The main goal of this paper is to show why verbal irony is used and how it is generated and interpreted n terms of Metapragmatic Principle. Many previous analyses like Grice (1975) and Sperber and Wilson (1981, 1986) have tried to explain the mechanism of irony. But none of them could give a clear answer to the question. In particular, they all lack the motivation why people use irony instead of literal statements. Metapragmatic Principle, proposed by Lee (2007), would be able to give the answer with its two goals in communication: risk management and emotion expression. Metapragmatics is concerned about the interpersonal goal whereas pragmatics is interested in informational goal in the conversation. To achieve the interpersonal goal is one of the most important reasons to use irony. It is also possible to understand the mechanism of irony in this way and to make it more solid by complementing pragmatic perspectives.
