Abstract

Background: As increasing public interests in health and medical care, and accelerating aging society, the attitudes of medical facilities has been changed from 'provider-centered' to 'demander-centered'. We could assume that the space images of general hospitals, being used by all different ages should reflect each age's preference tendencies of them, because space images have significant influences on user's behaviors. Thus, the purpose of this study is to provide the preferred vocabularies of space images by age groups as a reference for improving the spatial qualities of general hospitals. Methods: At first, we reviewed literatures regarding to age based attitude surveys on healthcare, emotional image and tendency of color preference. And then, we carried out an online survey targeting 1,500 people aged from 20s to 60s, 300 persons for each age group, during one month, starting at August 31, 2016. Result: The result of attitude survey on the most important space in general hospital appeared that 50s and 60s preferred 'O.P.D.', while 20s and 30s did 'treatment room'. Regarding to question asking the space needed improvement, 50s and 60s answered 'parking lot', while 20s and 30s answered 'patient's room' and 'rest room'. The result of the question that most preferred vocabularies in the overall spaces of the general hospitals appeared similar to the previous study which indicated 'mild', 'clear', and 'natural'. While 50s and 60s preferred 'mild', 20s preferred 'modern'. Conclusion: The survey showed that each age group's attitudes about spaces in general hospitals appeared rather significantly different. The preferred vocabularies of space image appeared similar to the results of the previous study. The preference tendency about space image vocabularies in general hospitals were different by each generation.
