Abstract

During the Three Kingdoms period, quivers can be broadly categorized into two types based on their form: sitong (矢筒) and sibok (矢箙). Most of the quivers recovered from tombs in the Yeongnam region fall into the sibok category. In Silla, ornate sibok began to be produced around the mid-5th century. Five sibok quivers of three distinct types were unearthed from Tomb No. 41 in the Jjoksaem area of the Daereungwon district in Gyeongju. Sibok A is adorned with gilt-bronze fittings and uses a gilt iron or bronze-capped round-headed fixing spike. Sibok D features ㄱ-shaped hanger fittings and iron- capped round-headed fixing spike. Sibok B, C, and E have hanger fittings that split into two branches and are made using iron or silver-plated iron round-headed fixing spike. In the highest-grade (Grade 1) tombs of Gyeongju, sibok with elaborate gilt-bronze fittings, gold- or silver-plated caps, and decorative motifs such as dotted lines or wave patterns have been found. In contrast, Tomb No. 41, a mid-tier burial, yielded sibok made with simpler iron, gilt iron, or silver-plated iron fittings. This suggests that access to highly decorative sibok was restricted based on social rank. Meanwhile, the three types of sibok excavated from Tomb No. 41 in the Jjoksaem District provide insight into the stylistic transition of Silla quivers. In particular, noteworthy are sibok B, C, and E (Type II), characterized by the bifurcated lower ends of the hanging fittings and the use of iron or silver-plated iron pegs (wondujeong) to attach the fittings. These Type II sibok can be seen as the prototypes of Type III, which feature semi-cylindrical quivers with large-ring fittings, and also as transitional forms between the rectangular-bodied Type I and the semi-cylindrical Type III sibok.
