Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to develop a chair equipped with a multi-tilting seatpan that can help relieve back discomfort and fatigue by promoting the mobility of the pelvis and lumbar spine and verify its effectiveness scientifically. Methods: The multi-tilting seatpan developed in this study promotes mobility of the lumbar spine by allowing the seatpan to respond to the user's movements. To verify the effectiveness of the developed seatpan, 10 male college students were selected as subjects, and motion analyzers and EMG were used to measure the pelvic movement and erector spinae muscle activity during sitting. Results: As a result of the motion analysis, the developed multi-tilting seatpan chair showed larger displacement distance of the pelvis from front to back and left and right than that of the fixed seatpan, As a result of the spinal(L5/S1) erector muscle activity evaluation using EMG, the fatigue index was lowered as the post-MDF(median frequency) value was measured higher than the pre-MDF value in all subjects while using the multi-tilting seatpan chair. Conclusion: The body movement responsive multi-tilting seatpan developed in this study promoting the mobility of the lumbar spine and pelvis, thereby reducing back fatigue of users who sit for a long time to work or study. It can be used as a chair to reduce and suggests the need for additional research and development for its introduction and spread in the future.
