Abstract

Background: This study aims to analyze how complexity management affects user experience in mobile map services and to propose an initial evaluation framework for assessing it. Rather than simply reducing complexity, it should be systematically managed to enable users to interact efficiently and intuitively. In particular, since mobile map services integrate various types of information and functions, effective complexity management is essential for improving the user experience. This study analyzes complexity in both domestic (Naver Map, KakaoMap) and international (Google Maps) map services. Methods: A location search scenario was established, and interfaces were captured to analyze complexity based on UI element count, information organization, and visual density. User surveys and interviews focusing on high-complexity screens were conducted to identify perception patterns and derive management strategies. An evaluation framework applying weighted connection strengths reflecting user journey transitions was developed. Results:The analysis showed that mobile map services adopt different complexity management strategies in information organization, navigation support, and visual control. Naver Map used hierarchical structuring for stable navigation, KakaoMap aided quick decisions with minimal information, and Google Maps delivered dynamic content through real-time integration. To reflect how complexity accumulates or resolves throughout the user journey, the study proposed an evaluation framework using irreversible connection strength, allowing complexity to be assessed systematically across the entire journey rather than on isolated screens. Conclusion: This study redefines complexity in mobile map services as a design variable to be systematically managed and optimized across the user journey, rather than merely eliminated. Complexity was found to have dynamic characteristics, accumulating or dissipating throughout user exploration rather than remaining static at individual screens. Based on this, an initial evaluation framework was proposed, combining journey-stage complexity elements and irreversible weighted transitions. This provides a comprehensive method for evaluating complexity over time and behavior transitions, offering a methodological foundation for managing complexity in diverse digital service environments.
