Abstract

Background: Screen sports, which integrate virtual reality (VR) technology, have emerged as a new trend in leisure by offering immersive exercise experiences. As maintaining user engagement becomes increasingly important in digitally mediated sports environments, gamification elements have attracted attention as a means to promote sustained participation. These elements are expected to positively influence users’ sports commitment and their intention to continue using such services. This study focuses on the user interface (UI) of screen golf to examine how gamification elements affect sports commitment and continuous usage intention. Methods: With reference to prior studies, key elements of gamification and sports commitment were identified, and screen golf UI cases were analyzed to explore how these elements are implemented in the user experience. A survey was then conducted with individuals who have experience using screen golf, and the data collected were analyzed statistically to empirically test the effects of gamification elements on sports commitment and continuous usage intention. Results: The findings show that among the gamification elements applied to the screen golf UI, social relationship and competition significantly influenced both exercise immersion and continued usage intention, with the relationship element exerting the greatest impact. In contrast, the challenge element showed no statistically significant effect on either variable. These results suggest that users tend to experience greater immersion and motivation through social interaction and competitive features rather than challenge-based elements within the screen golf environment. Furthermore, both cognitive and behavioral elements of exercise immersion were found to have a positive effect on continued usage intention, with cognitive immersion demonstrating a relatively stronger influence. Conclusion:In interactive sports systems such as screen golf, flexible gamification design strategies are required to accommodate the diverse characteristics and immersion types of users. This study confirmed through empirical analysis that UI elements emphasizing social interaction and competition serve as key factors in promoting exercise immersion and sustained user engagement, offering valuable guidance for future gamification-based design strategies. In contrast, the lack of significance observed in the challenge element indicates the need for personalized design approaches that account for individual capabilities and usage patterns, along with integrated reward and feedback mechanisms. Future research should adopt qualitative and experimental methods to more precisely analyze immersion experiences and derive practical implications for the application of gamified UI design.
