Abstract
While mummy studies in Europe or North America reported remarkable achievements during past times, we just took the first step toward complete comprehension of biological characteristics of Korean mummies found in tombs of Joseon Dynasty. To catch up with the academic level of mummy studies in European countries, we need to review the past history of their studies on Egyptian mummies, by which the current academic standard of Korean mummy studies could be evaluated. In this study, we summarized mummy studies in Europe or North America after 19th century on, trying to find much efficient way for making our Korean mummy studies successful. Considering that there are very few ancient samples for authentic ancient DNA (aDNA) works in Korea, it is very crucial for us to make our collection of Korean mummies much fit for investigation of aDNA researchers on them. Since we admit that many problems should be solved as soon as maybe for achieving successful progress in our studies on Korean mummies, continuing efforts by researchers in this field of Korea would be needed for the time being.
