Abstract

This study investigates the productivity-employment (hours worked) nexus using the quarterly data of 1980: I~ 2003: IV for the Korean economy by using structural vector autoregression models. Empirical results showed that favorable technology shock increased hours worked but not as significantly as, when labor productivity was used as productivity. However, positive technology shock significantly increased hours worked, when TFP was used as productivity. The results contrast with recent empirical studies that reported favorable technology shocks reduced hours worked in the short-run for the US, undermining the predictability of real business cycle theory.
