초록

IS-LM 모형은 지난 70여년에 걸쳐 거시경제학 내에 존립하며 1960년대에는 거시 경제학의 핵심모형으로 자리 잡았었다. 그러나 현재는 학문적 연구대상으로도, 현실경제의 설명방식으로도 의미를 상실했다고 평가되고 있다. 그럼에도 IS-LM 모형은 여전히 중요한 모형으로 인식되고 있고 대부분 거시경제학 수업의 주요 내용이 되고 있다. 이러한 현상은 일종의 ‘인지부조화’ 상황으로 파악될 수 있다. 이 현상의 원인을 라카토슈의 ‘과학적 연구프로그램 방법론’을 통해 해명하는 것 이 본 연구의 과제이다. 라카토슈에 의하면 한번 만들어진 연구프로그램은 반증 사례가 나온다고 폐기되 지 않고, 반증 사례가 누적되고 대안적 프로그램이 대두되어야만 폐기된다. 이러 한 관점에서 본 연구는 IS-LM 모형의 존립 이유를 경제학 방법론적 측면을 강조 하며 살펴본다. 이를 위해 먼저 모형과 이론 그리고 경제적 사실 간의 관계를 해 명한다. 다음으로 라카토슈의 과학적 연구프로그램의 함의를 분석한다. 이를 바 탕으로 IS-LM 모형의 전개과정을 분석하고, IS-LM 모형의 존립 이유를 설명한다. 마지막으로 한국 경제학 교육에서 IS-LM 모형의 용도를 살펴보고 글을 맺는다.

Abstract

IS-LM model is perhaps the prime example of cognitive dissonance in economics and it is problematic to many economists. This paper is concerned with the question, why has IS-LM model persisted. It outlines and explains the main elements and way of thinking about IS-LM model in macroeconomics with respect to the conception of Lakatos’s research program. It is argued that IS-LM model can be characterized as a protective belt of the general equilibrium research program
