Abstract
This paper analyzed the changing phase and symbolic meaning of the pattern, and the Style and Mantra Sign of Cover page(開法藏眞言) of The Illustration of Saddharmapundarika Sutra in Silver on Indigo Paper(紺紙銀泥妙法蓮花經), Volume 3 owned by Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University. Saddharmapundarika Sutra in Silver on Indigo Paper is a scripture translated into the fifth, sixth, and seventh of the 28 articles by Gumaragip in 406. This scripture is a set of sutras with the Lotus Sutra (Volume 1, 7) of the National Museum of Korea and the Lotus Sutra (Volume 2, 4, 5, 6) of the Central Museum of Buddhism. This scripture was first published in 1422. First, it is about the Mantra Sign of Cover page written in the title of the Saddharmapundarika Sutra in Silver on Indigo Paper, Volume 3. This code is a the Dharani for requesting access to Buddhist scriptures. This symbolizes the spirit of information contained in the scriptures. In addition to this sutra transcription, this sign is generally confirmed in Goryeo and early Joseon sutras. In the case of woodblock scriptures, , this sign was partially used from the early to mid-1500s of the Joseon Dynasty. However, it seems to disappear after the middle of the 16th century. Next, the changes in the style of the Illustration of Sutra, change of the outer pattern, and the symbolic meaning of the Illustration were examined. The Illustration of Sutra continues to be typical of the 14th century in Goryeo, but it shows a tendency to formalize in a formative way. In particular, there is an interesting motif on the outer pattern of the belt. The patterned belt is the site of the Buddha's method and has the meaning of dividing the specific areas that symbolize Buddha's law. The motif of the golden pestle on this outer belt means to ward off evil spirits in order to protect the place of truth from evil. However, in the 14th century, the round shaped Pattern between the golden pestles became the mainstream. From the late 14th century to the beginning of the 15th century, it was replaced by a Treasure Pattern with Money Motif(錢寶文), one of the eight treasures. It can be seen that the band of patterns is a combination of the golden pestle motif that protects Buddhism and the auspicious motifs that symbolizes wealth.
