Abstract

According to Kayser, grotesque is a word meaning odd, unnatural, bizarre, strange, funny, caricatural, etc. Also, grotesque combines different things with each other to produce laughter as well as fear. This is described as something detached from normality; for instance, combination between plant and animal makes grotesque. Sometimes, this aspect of grotesque happens through switching the position of upper and lower parts of a body. Reversal of the body structure makes a body upside down. Also, there can be found displacement of inside and outside of a body. Roald Dahl’s The Twits is one of the best examples of grotesque bodies. In this book, upside down bodies of the Twits make readers arouse fear and laughter. Its last scene leaves cruelty, oddity and bitterness. Through Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we can find anomaly and deformation of bodies with 4 main characters. Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland shows the importance of Alice’s deforming and reforming bodies. According to her changing viewpoints, she has chances of viewing objects in terms of her subjective perspective. In conclusion, children’s literature embodies significance of reversal of the established order by means of grotesque bodies. This provides a lot of harmless fun through subversion and reversal of hierarchical order through upside down body, which is related with grotesque.
