이 글은 오정희 소설 『새』의 배경이 되는 공간을 중심으로 작중인물의 의식이 내ㆍ외부적인 요소와 어떻게 직ㆍ간접적으로 연관되면서 의미를 생산해내고 있는지 살펴보려고 한다. 오정희 소설 『새』는 가정과 사회에서 외면당하고 있는 아이들의 비극적인 생활이 서사화 되어 있다. 이 소설 속의 어린 화자는 영악해서 자신을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 어른들의 위선적이고 폭력적인 행위들을 다양한 관점에서 답습하거나 침묵할 뿐이다.『새』에서 사건의 근원은 가부장의 폭력에서 시작되나 모성의 부재로인해 아이들이 처한 부정적인 현실은 더욱 도드라져 보인다. 어린 화자가 계속해서 엄마를 찾고자 공간을 전전하는 과정에서 아이들은 긍정적인 모성을 만나기 힘들기 때문이다. 모두가 아이들의 모성이 되기를 거부하기 때문이다. 거부된 삶을 살아나가야 하는 아이들은 선택권이 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 어린 화자가 내적성장을 이루어내는 것이 소설 『새』이다. 아이들이 욕망하는 것은 폭력을 이겨낼 수 있는 힘과 즐거운 집에서 사는 것이다. 그렇지만 아이들의 소망은 이루어지지 않는다. 따라서 이 글에서는 아이들이 처한 현실을 공간의 유형에 따라 살펴보고자 한다. 공간에 따라 의미를 분석하는 것은 복합적이고 애매한 구조로 서사화 되는 『새』를 제대로 읽어내는 방법이기 때문이다.
Abstract
This paper attempts to examine how the consciousness of characters is directly and indirectly related to internal and external factors, producing meaning, focusing on the space that is the background of Oh Jeong-hee's novel Bird. Oh Jeong-hee's novel Bird is the narrative of the tragic life of children who are neglected at home and in society. The young narrators in this novel are clever and just follows or silences the hypocritical and violent acts of the adults around them from various points of view. In Bird, the root of the incident begins with the violence of the patriarch, but the negative reality facing children due to the absence of mother figures is more pronounced. This is because it is difficult for children to meet positive mother figures in the process of the young narrators moving around their space to find their mother, as everyone refuses to be the mother figures of the children. Children who have to live a life of rejection have no choice. Nevertheless, the young narrators achieve inner growth in Bird. What the children desire is the power to overcome violence and a happy home. However, the children's dreams do not come true. Therefore, in this paper, I would like to examine the reality of children according to different types of space. Analyzing Bird according to space is appropriate due to its specific complex, and ambiguous structure.
