Abstract
The purpose of this study is to share the results of the Paleolithic and Neolithic prehistoric sites discovered during the Sakhalin-2(Сахалин-2) large-scale construction project on Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East, and to confirm the importance of cultural heritage protection through this. In addition, rather than simply archaeological excavations, we aim to examine the footsteps of the ancient people of Sakhalin Island through the results of convergence research with related disciplines. Participants in the cultural heritage protection program conducted during the construction section of the Sakhalin-2 project include archaeologists, project implementers(Sakhalin Energy), and field workers. Through their joint efforts, many secrets of Sakhalin Island’s past were revealed, as well as unique archaeological data hidden under thick layers of soil. Rescue excavations were conducted in exceptional cases, and the method of cultural heritage protection was primarily to modify the pipeline route. Through this decision, the boundaries of the pipeline route and other construction objects were changed more than 40 times, while 88 archaeological sites were preserved. Rescue excavations are considered exceptional measures, and only eight sites have been excavated in the construction area. Among them, this paper will examine the results of the Paleolithic sites ‘Sennaya-1’ and ‘Ogonki-5’ and the Neolithic sites ‘Adopt-2’ and ‘Slavnaya-4’. The excavation that shocked the archaeological world was the excavation of ‘Sennaya-1’ in the Dolinsky region conducted by archaeologists from Sakhalin State University in 1998. The stone tools found at this site are dated to 230,000 years ago, and are considered to be the oldest in the Far East. Although the debate over the chronology among scholars continues, it can be said to be the greatest result of the cultural heritage protection program during the Sakhalin-2 project period in that it sheds light on the history of human habitation on Sakhalin.
