초록
This paper tests whether a firm’s productivity improves after entry into export markets which is called the learning-by-exporting hypothesis. Unlike existing literature, I focus on the productivity growth after an economic crisis and investigate whether an exporting plant’s productivity changes before or after a crisis. To check if I will get consistent results regarding learning-by-exporting, I use three empirical methods which are regression, matched sampling, and a non-parametric method for Chile’s manufacturing plant-level data. As a result, the three methods yield consistent results that support learning-by-exporting. In addition, learning effects after the crisis weakened compared to before the crisis. Plants that started to export after a crisis do not enjoy productivity growth that is as high or as long as those that did so beforehand.
