Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the composition of the “Royal Regulations(王制)” in the Superficial Annotations on the Book of Rites(禮記淺見錄) and to historically examine Kwon Geun’s perception of the ritual system. Kwon Geun’s Superficial Annotations on the Book of Rites has garnered interest as a material exemplifying the advancement of ritual studies in the early Joseon dynasty, yet the emphasis has primarily been placed on the chapters showcasing Kwon Geun’s neo-Confucian philosophies. As a result, the “Royal Regulations” has not received much attention, despite being one of the works in which Kwon Geun took time to rearrange the text and edit the annotations. This study focuses on the “Royal Regulations” in the Superficial Annotations on the Book of Rites to understand how Kwon Geun perceived the system of the three dynasties. Kwon Geun reorganized the text of the “Royal Regulations” from his own perspective and divided the chapters by theme. He believed that the “Royal Regulations” can be categorized into (1) regulations on wages and titles from the king to the nobles, (2) rituals for the king and feudal lords regarding their audiences at the royal court and visits to the feudal courts, inspection tours of the fiefs, ancestral rites, conquests, and hunting, (3) ancestral rites and funeral rites, (4) the duties of the Chief Minister, the Minister of Works, the*Senior Researcher, Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Seoul National University Minister of Instruction, and the Minister of War, and (5) the refinement of social customs. Kwon Geun also made extensive edits to the annotations of the “Royal Regulations” in the Superficial Annotations on the Book of Rites. However, these edits to the annotations were primarily made in Chapter 1 of the “Royal Regulations” in the Compilation of commentaries on the Book of Rites(禮記集說), and not all annotations were edited according to a consistent standard. Kwon Geun viewed the “Royal Regulations” as a comprehensive and relatively intact record of the culture and institutions of ancient China, an era deemed ideal by Confucian scholars. His rearrangement of the text and editing of the annotations were driven by this belief. He removed the annotations by the two Chengs and Zhu Xi that challenged the original text in his annotations in Chapter 1, seeking to affirm that the “Royal Regulations” accurately depicted the institutions established by former kings. With that premise, Kwon Geun worked to specify and clarify the hierarchy of the ritual system outlined in the “Royal Regulations.” Reorganizing the chapters was part of this endeavor. Assuming that the ritual system in the “Royal Regulations” is complete, Kwon Geun aimed to demonstrate that the chapters were well-structured, adhering to a strict hierarchy and duties. Kwon Geun’s understanding of rituals resonated with Jeong Do-jeon’s belief that “order” was fundamental to rituals and also aligned with the political mission of reestablishing the hierarchical national order at the end of the Goryeo dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon dynasty.
