Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of bed position and planting densities of watermelon grown on two-story bed on fruit quality in summer season (strawberry resting period). The width, length and height of a bed were 22, 102, and 13 cm and the medium in bed were used coir. Watermelon was treated in accordance with the bed position and planting density, one crop planting per one bed (A), upper bed (B) and lower bed (C) as one crop planting per one bed, upper bed (D) and lower bed (E) as two crop planting per one bed, respectively. Watermelons (Citrullus vulgaris Schard) were planted on two-story bed on May 8 and grown by drip irrigation and nutrient solution, and harvested on July 25. To compare quality of watermelon, fruit weight and size were measured, and analyzed phytochemicals as ascorbic acid, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, sugar content and acidity. External fruit quality as fruit height, fruit thickness and fruit weight was the highest in treatment A. In particular fruit weight was heavier in order of treatment A, B, C, D, and E. There was no significant difference in plant height and leaf number according to treatments, however stem diameter and leaf area were greater significantly in treatment A. It was no significant difference in treatments to flavonoid, antioxidant activity and acidity in flesh fruit. While sugar contents in fruit were higher significantly in treatment A, B, and D. Phenolic compounds in fruit was the highest in treatment A. The results were suggested that treatment A is suitable for producing big size watermelon, and Treatment D and E are an advantage for producing small size watermelon.
