Abstract

Recently in South Korea, the role of effective forest management has been emphasized due to debates regarding the relationshipbetween forest harvesting and landslides, along with doubts about the effectiveness of forest tending work. However, there is a lackof quantitative assessment data to investigate the soil reinforcement of tree roots according to forest management in South Korea. Topropose future research topics and directions for quantitatively assessing the soil reinforcement of tree roots, we analyzed internationaland domestic research trends in soil reinforcement of tree roots over the last 30 years (1990–2019) using bibliometric analysis. Theresults showed an increasing trend in the publication of international research articles, alongside a diversification in research categoriesand areas. The research areas of international research have been classified into four groups: (ⅰ) understanding the soil reinforcementmechanism of tree roots, (ⅱ) assessing the soil reinforcement according to forest stand conditions, (ⅲ) assessing slope stability consideringthe soil reinforcement effect of tree roots, and (ⅳ) assessing stream bank stability considering the soil reinforcement of tree roots. Thecontinued focus on soil reinforcement of tree roots in international research indicates that the structure and function of forest ecosystemsare recognized as important factors in preventing landslides. In contrast, domestic research remains at an initial stage compared to international research, with a focus on only the first and third research areas. Especially, research on the differences or changes in soilreinforcement by various species, growth conditions, and after disturbances (the second research area) is necessary to investigate thelandslide prevention effect of changed forest ecosystems due to climate change.
