Abstract
This study aims to explore and analyze the characteristics of young children's emotional understanding and expression from their own perspectives, in order to provide foundational data for the development of an AI model designed to support emotional development in early childhood. To this end, interviews were conducted with 26 children aged 3 to 5 and six teachers at S Kindergarten in Seoul. The collected data were analyzed, and the findings were reviewed by the participating teachers and two qualitative researchers to ensure validity. The findings of the study are as follows. First, children understood emotions based on relationships with others—such as peers and teachers—and on situations occurring at home and in kindergarten. They also demonstrated the ability to understand emotions through others’ facial expressions, eye gaze, and tone of voice. These results suggest that for AI to become a meaningful interaction partner for digital-native children, it must be designed in a way that enables reciprocal interaction. Second, children tended to express emotions through simple and straightforward language and behaviors, or by relying on adults such as parents and teachers, often using methods they had been taught. In cases of negative emotions such as anger or sadness, children sometimes chose to remain silent or clench their fists to endure the feelings. These characteristics imply that an AI model should be designed based on an analysis of children's emotional vocabulary and verbal expression levels. Moreover, the AI should include functions that allow it to patiently recognize and accompany children during moments when they choose to express emotions through stillness or self-restraint.
