Abstract

This study investigates the interplay between sedentism and mobility in Bronze Age settlements established on the alluvial plains of the Han River basin, focusing on two key sites: Misa-dong (Hanam) and Topyeong-dong (Guri). Alluvial landscapes—comprising floodplains, natural levees, and backswamps—provided crucial settings for habitation and agriculture from prehistory onward, yet recurring inundation and geomorphic change posed persistent risks. Synthesizing settlement features (e.g., pit-houses, ring-ditch enclosures) and site-formation evidence (rebuilding episodes, spatial reconfiguration, and short-term occupations), the paper evaluates how communities balanced long-term residence with episodic relocation. The comparative review indicates that diversification of agricultural bases and the use of relatively stable micro-landforms (especially natural levees) underwrote sustained occupation, while flood events and hydrological variability periodically triggered abandonment, rebuilding, or shifts in dwelling clusters. Together, the Misa-dong and Topyeong-dong sequences demonstrate that Bronze Age riverside communities along the middle Han River adopted flexible spatial strategies that combined investment in place with environmental responsiveness. These findings refine our understanding of settlement persistence and mobility as coexisting, scale-dependent processes in alluvial settings and contribute to broader discussions of human–environment interaction in prehistoric Korea.
