Abstract

This study aims to provide fundamental data that can be utilized to develop measures to preventing the mortality of the Long-tailed Goral (Nemorhaedus caudatus), a natural monument, which may occur due to winter climate conditions. We analyzed reported disappearance cases, the locations of carcasses, and weather data from Gangwon Province. The mortality rate of the Long-tailed Goral increased approximately 3.6 times compared to the previous year, with the highest mortality recorded in Yanggu-gun, Hwacheon-gun, and Goseong-gun in March. An analysis of mortality by age revealed that both male and female gorals with lower hierarchical status, particularly those aged 1–2 years and 15 years or older, exhibited higher mortality rates. Additionally, the distribution of deaths by year indicated that fatalities were concentrated in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in 2024. The DMZ serves as a habitat for the Long-tailed Goral due to minimal human interference and well-developed rocky terrain. However, restricted mobility caused by the Military Demarcation Line, combined with heavy rainfall, is believed to have contributed to the increased mortality rate. A comparison of winter precipitation and mortality trends over the past three years revealed that when cumulative precipitation exceeds 230 mm, gorals experience impaired mobility, isolation, and energy depletion, leading to a higher mortality rate. Analysis of the goral population decline and Gangwon Province weather conditions confirmed that the species is particularly vulnerable to heavy snowfall. It is necessary to actively establish effective preventive measures to preserve and manage the korean national monument, the Long-tailed Goral, in response to the country's geopolitical situation and changing climate.
