본 논문은 DMB와 그 사회적 함의를 이론적으로 접근하기 위한 시론적 작업의 성 격을 갖는다. 이에 DMB를 인터페이스, 공간성, 시간성, 그리고 상호작용 측면에서 살펴보았다. 인터페이스 측면에서는 DMB를 새로운“문화 인터페이스”로 규정하면 서 그 특성을 추출하였다. 공간성 차원에서는 TV의 역사적 발전을 추적하면서 특히 이동성과 사사화라는 두 개념을 중심으로 DMB의 위상을 규정하였다. 시간성 차원에 서는 DMB를“틈새시간 미디어”로 규정하여 DMB가 창출할 새로운 생활리듬, 즉 모 바일 리듬의 특성을 설명하였다. 그리고 DMB를 매개로 이루어지는 상호작용을“다 중적 관여”가 이루어지는 과정으로 규정하고 사용자-DMB-세계 사이의 3자 관계를 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 DMB의 사회적, 문화적, 철학적 함의를 간략히 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study is to examine the nature of DMB, i.e. digital multimedia broadcasting, and its social implications. Current discussions about DMB have focused mainly on policy evaluations and business models for DMB, which reveal theoretical poverty, if not all. This paper theoretically discusses DMB’s interface, spatiality, temporality, and interactivity. DMB can be defined as one of “cultural interfaces” which afford unique interface to cultural contents. In the spatial dimension, DMB is discussed in terms of mobility and privatization, which are two key concepts to characterize TV’s historical development. In the temporal dimension, DMB can be defined as one of “niche-time media”which continues to form a new mode of mobile rhythm in everyday life. Moreover, the mobile interaction via DMB can be defined as a process of multiple engagements in the triple relationship of user- DMB-world. Lastly, DMB’s social, cultural and philosophical implications are briefly presented.
