Abstract

The very attraction of the drone is based on its use as a visual equipment in three-dimensional air spaces where humans cannot reach. As this flying camera becomes the eye in the sky, which was exclusively possessed by the authorities, it enables journalists, photographers, paparazzi, and even ordinary people to create something new. However, we know little about the video drone and there is no conceptual explanation for understanding the specificities of drone video. This study suggests that the unique motility of the drone actualizes the omniviewpoint visibility. The motility and omni-viewpoint visibility of the drone realize the visualization of seamless movement which combines whole and parts, breaking away from the conventional movement of the camera on its axis. The study suggest that such specificities of the video drone generate the extension or improvement of the existing visual equipments, and this provides new interpretive and aesthetic pleasure based on the drone’s modes of seeing, which are categorized into looking down, investigating, discovering, and watching together. It corresponds to the beginning of the post-camera age. The study examines the drone’s modes of seeing as the specific communication process focusing on the use of drone footage in the production of broadcast TV programs.
