Abstract
This study explored news use and engagement in online platforms among users in their 20’s with a focus on perceived affordances and gender differences. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted on 22 people (11 males and 11 females) who had experience consuming news on online platforms. Results of interview analysis showed that users were mainly aware of the visibility affordance that enable others to observe their activities on the platform and the persistence affordance that their news-related activities could be left on the platform. This perception of affordance interacted with negative perspectives of news engagement among people in their 20s. Furthermore, this perception had a negative impact on news engagement. However, it has also been found that users actively utilize editability affordance to offset visibility and persistence affordance. In addition, women perceived heterogeneity in a platform environment with a large number of men and were concerned about attacks or conflicts that could occur online. This study suggested the possibility that this perception negatively affects women's news use and engagement.
