광주광역시 장례식장의 여자 상복(喪服) 착용 실태와 상복 디자인 개발

Abstract

Mourning clothes are ceremonial garments worn by the family and relatives of the dead. Mourning clothes are worn as a courtesy to the dead and they also tell people that the person wearing it is in mourning. However, in modern times, not only the traditional funeral rites and period but also traditional mourning clothes have been changed and simplified. This study examined the types, sizes, materials, and colors of women’s mourning clothes sold or rented at funeral homes in Gwangju. This study found that at least women’s mourning clothes are still hanbok. And based on the findings, this study designed 3 types of mourning clothes in colors ranging from white to pale yellow by applying traditional mourning cloth elements and using light materials for summer. This study was done to inherit and develop the significance of tradition in the face of gradual disappearance of traditional mourning clothes. In other words, we need to show that traditional Korean culture can be inherited and developed further instead of letting it disappear by finding ways to inherit the spirit and meaning of traditional Korean culture while modifying it to suit the changing time.
