Abstract

This study explores characteristics of Chuncheon gut (exorcism) based on Han Seung-hui and Noh Won-pyo, the two individuals who have been involved in shamanism in the region of Chuncheon. Results of several field surveys that have been conducted so far show that Chuncheon gut existed, and this study examines its characteristics. Among Chuncheon gut types, jaesu-gut (exorcism for fortune) was the most fundamental one. In addition to that, Jinogi-gut, byeong-gut, etc. add or omit some tunes of exorcisms from jaesu-gut. Just like gut kinds in other regions of GangwOn Province, Chuncheon gut dedicates sacrifice to Seonang in the early stage, which suggests that Seonang is the very deity that governs this gut kind. Chuncheon gut uses three basic rhythms: geoseongjanggu, manusebajijanggu, and shinmyeongjanggu. There are only small number of rhythms, which is one characteristic of local gut kinds in Korea. For this reason, Chuncheon gut in its simple form has remained for a long period of time with no change. Chuncheon gut includes <Auyaseonggyeya Taryeong> and <Upnorae>, whose rhythms and shaman songs reflect its characteristics. Chuncheon has actively communicated with Seoul with the development of transportation, and in this process, Seoul gut has been introduced into this region as a kind of shaman gut. Chuncheon gut is of a great value in that each region of Korea has developed their unique gut practices. The future study will analyze shaman songs through a field survey on Chuncheon gut and further investigate characteristics of Chuncheon gut, particularly the meanings of deities stated in tuns of exorcism.
