Abstract
Virtual reality technology has been developed with various applications. Especially, physical activities have been considered as an important domain of the application. In manipulating artificial environments in virtual worlds, virtual reality enables experiencing the physical activities that are hard to do in reality because of the cost and safety problems. However, only few studies have addressed in detail for how the environmental conditions in virtual reality affect users’ restorative responses. This study considers three environmental conditions consisting of indoor, virtual urban, and virtual nature as the independent variables. Positive and negative affect, and intention to exercise are considered as the dependent variables. In the experiment, participants experience an indoor bicycle activity while exposed to one of the three environmental conditions. They report their responses in a questionnaire after the activity. Results show that virtual reality is an effective way to increase the restorative responses and environmental conditions in virtual reality can affect the responses differently.
