Abstract
This paper examines the meaning of healing in Toni Cade Bambara (1939∼1995)’s novel, The Salt Eaters (1980) from the perspective of womanism. I will analyze main characters and the issues of politics, spirituality and ecology of the novel. Bambara’s womanism embraces not only black women but also black men, and puts emphasis on the unification and solidarity of Third World women. This is a distinguishing character compared to different feminisms. Bambara’s The Salt Eaters is a healing story of a black woman social activist, Velma, dealing with the sociocultural context of the 1970’s in the US. The novel maintains that the healing of a black woman is deeply related with the healing of black community and the unification of Third World women, and that African traditional religions and cultures play key roles in creating a new consciousness in the black community. The political, ecological and spiritual dimensions of the novel shows an integrated perception of healing the community and the world. The wholeness of the black community can be recovered by womanist healing and African spirituality. In the process of healing, Velma restores the memory of ancestors and her spiritual power as a black woman. Therefore, the wholeness of the community is recovered by Velma’s healing, which presents the integrity of womanism. The solidarity of people leads to the healing of the individual and the community, and the possibility to search for new womanism and spirituality.
