Abstract

This study explores how religious education can be transformed and developed through online methods during the COVID-19 pandemic when face-to-face religious activities were restricted. Focusing on the case of online classes at Taiwan’s I-Kuan Tao Baoguang Chongzheng Temple, it comprehensively analyzes the digital transformation process from traditional on-site religious education and the effectiveness of online classes. By examining how I-Kuan Tao’s religious education transitioned from traditional methods to online-centered approaches during the COVID-19 period, this study highlights the ways in which educational continuity was maintained and the changes that emerged during this process. A survey conducted among participants of I-Kuan Tao online classes revealed that approximately 69.8% of respondents reported that online classes contributed to enhancing their faith. The research confirmed positive effects of online education, including improved faith, increased accessibility, and promotion of religious globalization. However, issues such as technological limitations, decreased learning concentration, lack of interaction, and absence of immersive experience were also identified, suggesting the need for practical alternatives to address these limitations. This study suggests that I-Kuan Tao’s online religious education case could contribute to building religious education models for the post-COVID era. Notably, after the declaration of the end of COVID-19, Baoguang Chongzheng Temple adopted a hybrid approach combining online and offline (on-site) classes, allowing participants to choose their preferred method, thereby complementing the advantages and disadvantages of each teaching method and enhancing sustainability. Importantly, this approach actively encouraged participant engagement. Additionally, online classes made public through YouTube channels can be accessed by diverse viewers regardless of their faith, which can be recognized as a means to promote understanding of pluralistic religious cultures. To respond to the multi-religious culture of modern society, more open online religious education programs need to be presented in various ways. Future comparative studies across different religions will continue to observe and analyze the effects of online religious education, fostering academic discussions on the development and changes in religious education in the post-COVID era.
