최근 Acemoglu et al.(2012, Econometrica 80, 1977-2016)은 미국의 산업간 중간재 공급망이 지수가 1에 가까운 멱법칙(power law) 분포를 따른다는 실증 결과를 제시하였다. 이는 중간재 공급 측면에서 각 산업이 수행하는 역할이 매우 불균등하며 그로 인해 개별 산업 교란도 거시적 차원의 경기변동에 상당한 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구는 이러한 Acemoglu et al.(2012)의 연구를 참고하여 우리나라 산업간 중간재 공급 구조의 특징을 살펴보는 한편 그들의 연구에서 다루지 않은 중간재 수요 구조와 수입 구조의 특징에 대한 실증 결과도 제시한다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우리나라의 산업간 중간재 공급망도 미국의 경우처럼 지수가 1에 가까운 멱법칙 분포를 따른다. 대부분의 산업은 중간재 공급자로서의 역할이 제한적이지만 일부 산업들은 전체 중간재 공급 흐름에 상당히 큰 영향을 미친다. 둘째, 중간재 수요자로서의 산업별 중요성도 멱법칙 분포로 근사화된다. 즉, 중간재 수요 측면에서도 일부 산업들이 결정적으로 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있다. 셋째, 수입 중간재 거래망도 공급과 수요 모두 멱법칙 분포를 따른다. 본 연구는 간단한 연쇄적 붕괴 모형을 이용하여 산업간 거래망이 “강건한 동시에 취약한” 특징을 갖는다는 점을 보인다. 대부분의 경우 개별 산업 교란은 거시적 함의를 갖지 못하지만 일부 중심 산업에서 발생한 부정적 교란은 경제 전반에 걸쳐 대규모 침체 확산 사태를 초래할 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 경기안정화 정책을 추진할 때 산업간 연결망의 중심 산업들에 더 많은 주의를 기울일 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
Recently, Acemoglu et al.(2012, Econometrica 80, 1977-2016) found that the out-degree distribution of the U.S. intersectoral trade network follows a power law with an exponent close to 1, an indication of significant asymmetry in the roles that sectors paly as input suppliers to others. They also showed that such a network structure can significantly amplify the effect of sectoral idiosyncratic shocks on aggregate fluctuations. Using the detailed input-output accounts for the Korean economy, this paper complements their work by showing the following. First, consistent with the US case, the out-degree distribution of the Korean intersectoral network can be approximated by a power law with an exponent roughly 1. Second, the power law approximation is also valid for the in-degree distribution; there exist sectoral hubs not only on the supply side but also on the demand side. Third, both out- and in-degrees of sectors are distributed according to a power law even when we look at the imported intermediate goods. Fourth, using a simple toy model of cascading failure, this papers demonstrates the robust yet fragile nature of the intersectoral network; while in most cases idiosyncratic sectoral shocks do not result in macroscopic changes, negative shocks to sectoral hubs can trigger a large cascade of recessions throughout the economy.
